A 3-point game and a 37-point game- what changed? Hamilton Wenham plays Amesbury twice, yet the second game wins 64-27. Was it an off-game for Amesubry, or is Hamilton Wenham getting better? What differed from the first quarter to the fourth?
On February 11th, 2025, Hamilton Wenham played Amesubry for the second time.
JV freshman Claire Finelli said, “Considering the JV team, I thought that varsity was gonna get crushed, but we beat them by a lot.” The JV team lost. Varsity won 64-27, with points from almost everyone on the team.
The varsity played extremely well, starting off strong and being up by more than 15 points each quarter. Senior Sasha Makogonov scored a season-high 22 points in the game.
The starters were Sadie Gamber, Sasha Makogonov, Annie Moynihan, Maren Cassidy, and Grace Harres. Sadie, Sasha, Annie, and Maren are all senior captains of girls’ basketball, while Grace Harres is a sophomore.
Freshman Mía Lougee said, “This game, we played a lot stronger, and we were playing more confidently in the first half. By the end of the third and beginning of the fourth, I was definitely confident in how we were playing.”
Lougee also said, “I think that we’ve improved a lot since we first played them.”

Mía Lougee is a freshman on the girls’ varsity team. She said, “Usually when I go in, we’re either up or down by a lot.”
Lougee went in in the fourth quarter, when the team was up by a lot. She scored 6 points in the fourth.
Senior captain Sasha Makogognov said, “We had a little lull in the middle there, where we lost a couple of games we shouldn’t have. But I think we did a really good job of turning it around after that. We’ve had some really good wins.”
Captain Sasha Makogonov said, “It’s a lot more pressure than the past years playing basketball, it feels like there’s a lot more stuff that’s relying on you and it’s like when bad things happen you take a lot more fault for it.”
The girls’ team was 14-6 for the regular season and was heading into its first playoff game against Amesbury on February 28th, 2025.
The girls beat Amesubry 65-36 and will play Gardner in the round of 16 on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025.
